This happened yesterday actually, right across the street from where I live--taken from ABC7 Los Angeles news:

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) -- An off-duty Gardena police officer fatally shot a man after getting into a violent, physical altercation Sunday afternoon.

According to authorities, a 39-year-old white male described by witnesses as being in an agitated state went into the Del Taco at 2901 E. Lincoln Ave. in Anaheim. When he left the restaurant, he got into an altercation with the Gardena police officer, who was off duty at the time and with this 6-year-old daughter.

A dozen people were inside the restaurant when the violence erupted at around 3:45 p.m. right outside the entrance to the establishment.

The two were involved in a violent physical struggle, as the man pummeled the officer to the ground. The officer shot once at close range, killing the man.

The officer, a 10-year-veteran of the Gardena Police Department, was hospitalized with a broken rib, facial lacerations and a possibly broken jaw.

Witnesses said that the suspect was acting strange and talking to himself. They also said that the suspect attacked the officer for no reason.

"I saw the undercover police struggling with the other individual and they were like horse playing and fighting," said witness Xavier Flores. "All of a sudden, the guy that got shot pushed the policeman against the wall of glass, and that's when we heard the bump and we all turned our heads around and we heard the shot. It was only one shot."

The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators say that at this point, they have no idea what set him off.

"He is familiar to law enforcement. He has had previous encounters, and based on those numerous encounters, we're certainly not ruling out the fact that narcotics may have been a factor in this," said Martinez.

It is unknown whether the officer's daughter witnessed the struggle and the shooting. She was not injured in the incident and is with family.

At first, I was surprised I hadn't heard the shot when it happened...but then I remember that my brother and I were watching "2012".

i tend to gravitate more with the male species. maybe because i am an only girl in the family. i am pretty close to my mom too. i only have one best friend whom i consider a friend by every word of it and she is the only woman i can talk to very deeply.

thanks! I saw him for dinner last night and he brought me an alpaca scarf. they were in the countryside and only got into the city for four days, so didn't see all that much of the disaster effects.

some guy who owns or owned Esprit bought this huge sheep ranch that straddles two national forests and is rehabbing it and donating it to Chile. my dad and the other volunteers took down wire fences, pulled noxious weeds and reseeded native plants and grasses. there was construction of lodges going on while he was there as well.

I told my dad he had bought many Esprit items when I was a teenager so he was involved on more than one level.

@nutsy--don't get me wrong, reasonable people have plenty of room to disagree about the effectiveness of his policies. That's why your comment about the president immediately following the sales tax comment confused me--I didn't see a connection between him and state/local sales taxes.

This whole trend terrifies me. So sad for her family, friends and community. I fear this is just the beginning. Any room out there in the desert? Maybe we will have to all band together like in Mad Max.

Yeah and that is for sure ReikiHeart! And you never hear about the schools actually getting any of that lottery money...why? If they were being helped that much, why is it that my friend ,who has a daughter in small local school, is constantly being asked to sell gifts, cookies etc. to raise money for the school. Some days she says she has a stomach ache over worrying about if there will be any teachers left to teach either, as they keep getting let go. It's terrible.
