Well, for starters, get her a cat (or two)!!

My "nest" has been empty a few years now, and it takes a while before the emotional pain leaves and a realization fills you that; OH BOY NOW I HAVE TIME FOR.... and if she doesn't have something to use that time for, it might be tougher. I started painting like crazy and I love every minute of it. Best, if either of my sons has to move back home again, it will be different, thanks to their cutting the cord.

@moonpluto: "why does he have to take all three cats?"

Because they are his. Each cat came via (was a gift of) a girlfriend (of his). The gfs came and went, the cats stayed. It's the funniest thing. (Although not haha funny.) After the 3rd, mommy said ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!! (They live(d) in a small apt.)

i don't have kids so am limited here but why does he have to take all three cats? Have a little rachmones (that's yiddish for "mercy")!!

I was the baby in the family, the last to leave for college... seems a long time ago. Coping strategies? I think she's gonna have to go through it... and surely once you and she move in together, that will be wonderful for her. As for the impact on my mother? i'm sure she missed me...

it's really, really funny that you should say that...i've got empty nest looming myself. i had to laugh when i read this...you evidently do find us...

my baby is getting ready to move across the country with her boyfriend. maybe within the next month or so, no firm date but he just got hired permanent as his formerly temp job, which is what they were waiting on. he's looking for a place now.

i feel for your fiance. if i were losing my CATS too, i'd be a wreck! as it is, with my kid i go back and forth from sad to worried to excited for her to excited for me (we've had kids the whole 20 years we've been marred - helloooo loud sex!) to confused and back again. my kid is smart and sensible, but very inexperienced and in some ways, delicate. i worry for her and i know i'm going to miss her like holy hell.

Given the demographics here, this may be lopsided in terms of responses.

In any case, I have a history of attracting mothers approaching, entering, in the middle of, or recovering from the empty nest phase (whether friends or lovers).

My fiancee is going through this process as I write. Her only son has recently moved out, and is taking the (3) cats with him, one at a time, over time (it's a trickle out). I know the mixed emotions mothers feels -- having to let go, to "lose", their baby, countered by the eagerness to "get their life back". My fiancee's process is amplified by the loss of the cats, who were like so many other children to her. It's like she's losing her entire brood in one fell swoop. Furthermore, this is a woman (late 40s) who has never, not once, lived alone. EVER. (We don't live together and I want her to have that experience at least once in her life, before we make a home together.)

Anyway... I would like to hear from parents here, your experience and feelings when you had to face the empty nest. (Or if it's looming.)

From the younger set, I would like your perspective if you were the last child to leave your parents's home. The impact on your parents, as well as on yourself.

The good, the bad, the ugly. Coping strategies? Things that worked well. Others not so well.

Bonus points for astrological insights!
