...I hope you can find a way to disagree with people on the board without insinuating they are unintelligent.

I wasn't insinuating that at all and I'm sorry you took it that way.

astroboy, your comment offended me. I don't know if you care or if this is what you intended but this is the case. In the future, I hope you can find a way to disagree with people on the board without insinuating they are unintelligent.

I am out of this thread now. I can't go back and forth about this because my husband is home and as you probably know I only see him a few days a month.

bye.

Been thinking about this, is it intelligent in a spiritual sense, nope. genetic diversity? nope. But when talking about immediate survival, maybe. Yes, it involves competition and wars, but when one nation fights another, is it based on racial or biological intelligence? hmm. But what is race? What is intelligence?

I think the idea of race is too narrow, but I think it is sometimes intelligent to band together to fight off invaders. However, in this day and age, we've gotten to a point where we have wider criteria and spiritual knowledge that we are all human beings and these are made-up boundaries.

Genetically we are much closer than we think. Remember that study where we discovered you can't easily determine a person's race by their dna? It's not intelligent to separate people by arbitrary lines if it doesn't help us in the long term.

Personally, I can imagine the world like a 60s sci fi novel with lots of mixed-race people by our current definitions. The funniest thing to me about those categories is that "hispanic" or "asian" or "asian-pacific islander" are neither races. Ha. I know some kiwis who are appear caucasian and hispanic people who are decended from lots of ethnicities or people of varying origins. Just a concept/tool to use for good, hopefully.

Do people realize the KKK is not conservative? They were Southern Democrats but the picture evokes emotion doesn't it.

You mean not Republican? The KKK is conservative. Maybe they were started by Southern Democrats back in the early to mid part of the century, but the definition of Democrats and Republican has changed greatly over time. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, but his party looks nothing like the party it is today. Even a contemporary president like Nixon was to the left of Obama.

Yeah, sometimes you have to scratch the surface of a statement before coming to any conclusions. That's what intelligent people do.

Edit: Oh sorry, IMO.

Honestly? I think we are all racist to one degree or another. People never want to admit it. But seriously: if a large group of people not-like-you infiltrated your intimate community or living quarters and offended you in some way (intentionally or not), or if they infringed on your personal sense of normal in a non-criminal way, I think you'd be surprised how quickly their race or nationality would leap to mind as a possible cause of their annoyingness. I think this is nasty, of course, but I think this is human nature.

Now, the pernicious, violent, malicious kind of racism that shouts epithets at a bus stop or drags people behind trucks or mutters hateful things as they rudely bump past someone -- that is a matter of ignorance and a complete lack of curiosity and humility, in my opinion. It's like "I know best, and you're just stupid." Whether you're "educated" or not, this mindset is sometimes a matter of personality or family culture, but it's still wrong. And objectively stupid. It's saying that you know best for all people and that you hold the standard for all rightness -- in how to eat, dress, approach other people, practice religion, etc. That's a pretty arrogant place to come from. I have done that, for sure, so I speak from experience. And now I see it in others. Just because it isn't on purpose doesn't mean it's wrong or not-stupid. It's stupid. Often a matter of never having had to leave your personal comfort zone and never feeling that you ought to for a minute. I don't know if that's intelligence or just character.

Yes, what is now termed conservative these days is technically center-right and was democrat in the 50s. But things have shifted.

But if you look at the entire continuum from right-right to center-right to center-left to left and libertarian in the voting, well there are lots of camps within them. I mean in the conservative camp there is so much variation already that you really have to break it apart. Neo-conservative to fiscal conservative to religious reasons, tea party, etc. If race wasn't an issue, it wouldn't be a button to push when politicking, would it? It's not purely that extreme, there are other feelings, anti-hispanic sentiment, or anti-japanese or chinese, or anti-Indian sentiment meshing with job loss or economic fears. These are real buttons they are pushing on the campaign trail. It's not what I think, but it's what they do. If they weren't there, there wouldn't be anything to push.

Without going into a longwinded explaination I'm going to just state that IQ tests are bunk. There are too many factors of intelligence to be distilled into one culturally biased test.

Looking over the scientific article the data sets are old. One from 1958 and another from the '70s. Approx 30 year longitudinal studies. That was for the UK tests which had a decent sample size. The American tests appear to have been in the 90's and have a much smaller sample size. Looking at some of their data it seems that the correlations are really quite varied, which is not what you'd expect from good measures.

Really, I don't feel this is a good study. I can see where they are coming from in what they are studying, but I'm not sure how the data was handled is consistent enough to be reliable.
