Chart Ruler and your Favorite Movie(s)
posted 5 months ago in Beginners
What's your chart ruler? What are your favorite movies? (Your chart ruler is the native ruler of your Rising sign.
Aries=Mars
Taurus=Venus
Gemini=Mercury
Cancer=Moon
Leo=Sun
Virgo=Mercury
Libra=Venus
Scorpio=Pluto (traditional ruler is Mars)
Sagittarius=Jupiter
Capricorn=Saturn
Aquarius=Uranus (traditional ruler Saturn)
Pisces=Neptune (traditional ruler Jupiter)
mine...chart ruler Jupiter (Sag)
Wizard of Oz:
The Lives of Others:
and Ghandi, with Ben Kingsley
Your turn!
Sorry, I put this on the beginners because I meant to add that info for people who didn't know.
:::editing post:::
hey thanks goddess!:)
Wow.... this is fascinating! I did not know this. Apparently with Virgo Rising, I'm Mercury ruled. Perhaps that explains the similar communication style that I share with my ex, who I believe is Gemini rising and therefore also mercury ruled.
Now I'm all distracted and can't pick a movie. I always listed Sound of Music as one of my favorites and don't see how this relates. Oh well!
Bananas, check where your chart ruler is in your chart...maybe the house it's in, and the house his is in could illuminate some of the communication stuff.
I have a thing for musicals. Offhand, Moulin Rouge and Dreamgirls are at the top of my movie charts!
(Mars in Leo - Aries Asc and Sun.)
Thanks Kash... I'm not sure if I'm understanding you.
First we look at the rising sign. Mine is Virgo. Virgo = Mercury.
So next we're supposed to look at the house where THAT planet (Mercury in my case) lives?
Mine's in the first house. I think.
yep...that's what i'm getting at. where your chart ruler is, and the aspects to it, are very gratifying things to learn about when it comes to your chart. i got kind of side-tracked here, i was just thinking about things you've written recently about your man. communication stuff.
No problem Kash, I'm enjoying the diversion (hope no one else minds). I'm probably confusing you. Right now I'm referring to my ex - the gemini with cap moon - but in most of my other posts I'm referring to the guy I'm currently with - the taurus with cancer moon.
The ex and I have a delightful (mercurial?) rapport. It's pretty surface though. We just skim along, chattering happily. There's a lot of social nicety which my Libra really appreciates. "He knows my unspoken rules". I know - there should be no rules, Pisces and the water signs would say... but my Virgo/Libra communication world has unspoken rules. I can't help it, I'm built this way.
Anywho, back to movies, which was the original topic, and thanks for the astrology lesson, Kashmiri!
Pluto/ Mars (pluto in the 12th, mars in the 9th)
Brazil, Beetlejuice, The Princess Bride, Harold and Maude- there are probably more that I like better, but I can't think of them right now. So, yeah. Fantasies with some dark humor.
Okay, wait - Beth, how do you know that Pluto AND Mars are your ruling planets? What's the "formula"? (as a neophyte I simply do not understand).
Thanks!
"Rear Window","Pulp Fiction","Storm of the Century" I am sure there are others,lol.
Gemini Rising so Mercury ruled chart with Mercury in Gemini in first house. All sorts of Airy.
Bananas some people also factor in the traditional ruler...I'm assuming Beth is Scorpio ASC,which would give her Pluto and Mars, if thinking of tradition. Scorpio's traditional ruler is Mars, she's noting it's in the 9th House.
Beth if I'm screwing this up, please tell me:)
I love Rear Window, too!
Nice one Kashmiri. My chart ruler is Venus - I love movies like Shakespeare in Love,, Letter from an Unknown Woman etc. Venus is in Sag in the 3rd so I also love romantic comedies, When Harry met Sally, Philadephia Story, My Favourite Wife, that sort of thing. In fact I think I prefer romantic comedies to plain old romances. Venus is Square Pluto, so films like Days of Heaven, Bad Timing. I also love a good thriller, mystery and detective stories, maybe that's Venus/Pluto too - The Departed, The Usual Suspects, most Hitchcock. Films that look good too, I really like great art direction. Really like sci-fi too, hmmm. Venus square Jupiter Pisces? Or SSxtile Mercury Aquarius? Maybe just Venus in Sag.
Pisces Rising- The Color Purple
"God's trying to tell you something"
Ooh, I just remembered The Fisher King - Got all the aspects in there, Venus, Sag, Pluto and Jupiter.
Cancer Rising, which would mean the moon is my chart ruler. Although my first house is largely dominated by leo, which is the sun...hahahah of course, I am a pisces with a virgo moon so I am conflicted..
Moon ruler
Favorite movies
Wizard of Oz
GWTW my first born is katie scarlett
Alfred Hitchcock movies. I love Rear Window, North By Northwest, Under Capricorn (a little scene Hitchcock whic is a favorite of mine)
John Hughes movies (Sixteen Candles, Home Alone, Pretty in Pink)
Saturn.
Brazil, Auntie Mame, It's a Wonderful Life & You Can't Take it With You ("Capra-corn" really does make me cry), Best Years of Our Lives, Princess Bride, Empire of The Sun, Carnival of Souls, Mulholland Drive, Sunset Boulevard, Pan's Labyrinth, Whale Rider, The Secret of Roan Inish, The Gods Must Be Crazy, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, that Bette Davis/Joan Crawford one I can't remember the name of, Election, Raging Bull, Full Metal Jacket, South Pacific
my chart ruler is the sun, with the sun in the 12th house. my favorite movie is the passion of joan of arc. lmao.
Chart ruler - Mercury
Favorite movies - too many to list, but here's a few that immediately come to mind:
Singing in the Rain
Casablanca
Stranger Than Paradise
Let the Right One In
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
Shadow of a Doubt (definitely my favorite Hitchcock although I love many of his films)
Now Voyager
The Adventures of Robin Hood (the one with Errol Flynn & Olivia de Havilland)
The Heiress
M
Virgo rising, with a chart ruler of Mercury (conjunct Neptune) in the third (Scorpio on the cusp).
Different movies for different moods and periods of my life, but these two stand out:
Prizzi's Honor with Nicholson and Kathleen Turner.
Hannah and Her Sisters.
Oh, and I like both Elizabeth movies with Cate Blanchett. Walsingham, and in the second one, when Elizabeth gets her horoscope from Dr. Dee.
Mercury is my chart ruler and i like thinky/talky movies that visually appeal to me
Some favorites: Fanny and Alexander, In the Realm of the Senses, Blue (probably for the image of the blue candy wrapper), Casablanca, Cabaret, The Night Porter, Last Summer in the Hamptons. When I was in college I was mildly obsessed with the movies of Peter Greenaway...
Cool choices, moonpluto. BLUE is awesome - that whole trilogy is great (although I think I like WHITE the best - it's the most light-hearted). And I just got FANNY AND ALEXANDER from Netflix to watch this weekend.
I've been on a Bergman kick in the last couple of weeks and over the week have revisited THE VIRGIN SPRING, THE SEVENTH SEAL and WILD STRAWBERRIES. He was such an amazing director.
Bergman is my favorite. I like the way he was never ashamed to... talk the way he talks. Maybe it's Swedish sensibility? I don't know... Dark, serious. That's where I'm at home. Trying to think of something funny that I've loved, hmm....Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost always makes me laugh.
I don't like White or Red as much as Blue... Have you seen that director's 'the decalogue' -- was made for tv i think-- some of it is really stunning.
Another movie that I love or that made an impression on me as a kid: All That Jazz. I also like drug addiction movies, esp heroin movies from the 70's -- i suppose it's its own genre by now. And no, I never did see Trainspotting.
I haven't seen TRAINSPOTTING either, but it's supposed to be great. I've got it in my queue. Never saw the director's decalogue either.
Yeah, I love Bergman's style and aesthetic. Definitely one of the best masters of the craft that we've ever had.
And ALL THAT JAZZ is a classic. Roy Scheider was great in that.
Did you see LET THE RIGHT ONE IN when it was out last year? It's an excellent movie from Sweden. It's known as the Swedish vampire movie - and it does have it's moments of horror and gore - but the movie is really so much more than that. It's excellent, and if you like that dark, serious tone I think you'd like it.
i'll look it up - never heard of it. Not into gore really -- but i always liked vampires. Loved andy warhol's dracula when iw as kid and the hunger........
I ADORE Juliet of the Spirits (Giulietta degli spiriti) directed by Federico Fellini
Although some could argue it's one tacky fiasco of a film, it's the only movie I've given a 5 star rating on Netflix so far.
Plot excerpt from wikipedia
Giulietta explores her subconscious and the odd lifestyle of her sexy neighbor, Suzy, as she attempts to deal with the mundane life and philandering husband that oppress her. As she increasingly taps into her desires, as well as her demons, she slowly gains more self-awareness and, ultimately, independence.
My chart ruler: Saturn (Capricorn Rising) in the 12th
*conjunct Uranus
*conjunct Neptune
*conjunct Ascendant
*opposition Mercury-Venus
Not a bad fit at all, right? Color me surprised!
Chart ruler = Leo (Sun) and my favorite movie is Once Upon A Time In Mexico!

Witty, hilarious movie. That whole spiel about shooting the cook = brilliant.
I also LOVE The Whole Nine Yards and Monty Pyton flicks. Dry humor + puns + wit = win with me.
Ruler is Mars in 9 cancer or pluto in 10 virgo but neptune smac on the scorpio asc....the film "The House of The Spirits" with Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Antonio Banderas....had big effect on me !
I love familly stories, dinasty stories, biographic stories most
Leo Rising = Sun ruled, with Sun in the 1st house also ruled by Leo
I love action flicks, dramatic movies, some romantic comedies, and some Pixar movies. I also like watching various anime.
Underworld 1+2
Harry Potter
The Gods Must Be Crazy
