This is interesting. Colorado Springs is a very conservative city about 60 miles from Denver.

    From the LA Times

The City Council is considering a program to let the Police Department sell confiscated guns to licensed dealers. Sales could net $10,000 a year.

The Colorado Springs City Council is expected in coming weeks to approve the final details of a program that would allow the Police Department to sell confiscated firearms to federally licensed gun dealers. Police have already stopped melting down the hundreds of guns they collect from crime scenes, drug houses or civilians who don't need them anymore.

The sales are projected to bring in about $10,000 a year, only a slight dent for a city that faced a deficit of one-quarter its $200-million annual budget this year. But it still helps, said Vice Mayor Larry Small, who proposed the gun sales.

    "Every penny counts," Small said.

Now Colorado is a "Make My Day" state, meaning we can shoot you if you break into our house and they are planning to extend this law to cover businesses as well.

Theoretically, the police department will be taking guns from criminals and putting them in the hands of law abiding citizens because I seriously doubt that criminals are going to go buy a gun from the police!  But what is stand out about this to me, is the POLICE themselves have got to support guns in the hand of citizens to consider something like this.

Personally, controversial as it may be, I would be for this. I just recognize budget deficits are going to result in cutbacks of all kinds and increased crime.

For example, California is looking to release 30% of the people they have in jail... combine this with cutbacks in the police department / across the board, all social services and you have a scenario where it would be wise to be prepared to defend yourself because the police are simply not going to get to you in time.

    Your opinion?

I used to be a "liberal" but now consider myself a liberterian. I agree with my 95 year-old grandfather who belongs to the NRA that we need to protect ourselves (including from the government!). I want to learn how to use a gun. Everyone should know how for safety reasons.

I actually used to be attracted to intellectual types--but I'm now involved with a gun-toting law enforcement scorpio guy! (I have a feeling it has to do with my fear that all hell is going to break lose in the coming years and I want someone who can protect me to be at my side.)
