I am a writer, have a mercury ruled chart, gemini at mid-heaven, a well aspected mercury and i'm sure there's more stuff i'm not thinking of cuz it's late on the east coast :) Mercury Mars sextile Moon Pluto...

anyway yep, it's kept me up, though it's other stuff that keeps me up as of late.
N Node in Leo & strong Venus, Venus ruled. Visual arts.
Mercury opposing Neptune never runs out of ideas or imagination, Saturn squares both, insecurity, 'impossible perfectionist' but technique. Saturn-Mercury & Mercury trines Pluto loves researching, preparing, practicing, digging, long hours. Saturn in 5th, natural skills & parents forbade creative activities. Uranus-Venus square, inventive or weird, been paid to work on truly eccentric projects. I do love to write for personal processing, that's creative too!

What do you think makes for long dry spells or intense bursts? 

Creativity is all over the place in my chart. I'm a big mess. My chart is ruled by Venus (in Pisces). I have Jupiter/Saturn in the 5th which lends itself to the patterns of on again off again painting/drawing routines. Some Neptunian flare to my personal planets makes me fantasize a bit more about it than actually do it. But NN Leo wants me to break out of my cage...

I can sleep just fine thankfully. :)

I love to write, it's comforting (3rd house moon) and I want to paint/draw all the time (Sun/Venus/Mars Pisces to Neptune). I also appreciate music and love to play music, but I'm not too good at making it, at least it's not a talent I've thought about discovering...:) 

Isabelle, I do think certain transits make for creative bursts or slow times, etc... When Saturn was conjunting my moon, I felt SLOW.  It was a crisis time but slow for the good stuff.  Now that Saturn is in Libra, it's flowing much better. Hmm, my creativity is very attatched to emotional life and well-being.

When Jupiter was transiting my 5th, my inspiration and new forms of writing went through the roof-- and now it's in my 6th and kind of daily life/business as usual....

I don't feel creative "at life" in general, but I guess I am. Just used to it. I live in kind of an odd neighborhood, do kind of odd work, and my relationship is odd and.... well, not that I think it's all odd, but outsiders may, those who lead the normal picket-fence lives, if any of them still exist or were even that normal to begin with. But I digress....

An intense burst could also be due to a transiting moon, touching on some powerful points in your chart... definitely Venus or Mercury making nice aspects...

Alicia, I'm not sure whether you're an early 60's or 80's, but if its the later, your Saturn return might help to "actually do it" more consistently.

Jana that's awesome, what kind of metal work?  what's the sign placement? are photography/metal sculpture your profession? 

" creativity is very attached to emotional life and well-being." absolutely. I had one exceptional 12 years burst which ended in 01, 12 best years of my life! I was at it everyday rain or shine. Discipline!!!  One that came almost effortlessly. As in daily actions becoming habits? Since then its been like 90% off. Spring 07 was an exception, now days petering n dwindling away. Ideas never actually dry up, I freeze into non action.

 2nd house  Cap Sun/Mars/Venus trine 10th house Virgo Pluto. For years I sculpted prototypes for the giftware industry (2nd and 10th house)  in soft metals, wax, and clay. The industry heaved its last gasp in 2000 and I started to work my ninth house Leo Node.  I'm a children's librarian (Virgo 10th house) now. So creativity has become more of a Leo/Sag performance (singing, reading and telling stories etc.).

My Cap Mercury conj Saturn loves to research too...but I can get swallowed up in details.  Post something to the Are you an artist thread if you feel like sharing!

I have N Node and Moon in Leo though 1st is in 5th and second one in 6th...

Sun in aquarius in 11th trine Jupiter/Saturn, sextile Uranus and square pluto..

Moon 5th ruler opposes mars/mercury, square uranus, sextile pluto and trine MC...

I want to use my creativity with intuition to speculate in markets:)..though not sure how good I can be !!!..

Asc ruler Conunct MC is generally a good thg but for me it is Neptune:(
