Doing Your Laundry In A Pinch
posted 3 months ago in Lounge
I live in an apartment complex too. The thought of someone stealing my clothes is always at the back of my head! But luckily no one has taken my clothes yet, so I've become more relaxed when it comes to getting my clothes from the washer/dryer. I've even forgotten my clothes for like 2 hours lol!
I remember those days. I've been known to wear slightly damp jeans. They dry into a body fitting mold.
I'm pretty leisurely about doing laundry, since I have my own machines in my own home. I usually have something in either the washer or dryer most days. That reminds me, I'd better dry my "barn clothes" before I need to wear them again in a few hours. ![]()
ETA: Correction: "known to wear" not "known to wet"
Even though I can do laundry at my leisure, it piles up SO quickly that I can't put it off, as much as I like to!
The couple of times my dryer went down were NO fun. I had to drag the laundry, piles and piles of it, to my mom's or my MIL's. Aaaaaaaaaaargh
(There are no laundromats close to my house. They're all within the same driving distance as Mom's and MIL's.)
I HATE DOING LAUNDRY. At the laundromat I just throw everything in a machine, add detergent and Oxyclean, insert the laundry card, and start it up. The sooner I can get out of there the faster. Some people come in with about 8 loads of laundry and their kids are running all over the place. ![]()
And I've have the adventure of stolen laundry once, at a different laundromat. NOT FUN. Even had to get the police involved, but I got it back, smelling like ciggies.
Did I mention I hate doing laundry? ![]()
I hear ya. Sometimes I put my laundry off to every OTHER week, but there are times I wish I would get my ass down there twice a week. Whenever I have holidays or time-off coming up, I plan ahead to do every piece of laundry ever imagined...and when the time comes I STILL put it off. If I lived in a place where I actually had my own machines--SHIT!--I'd probably do it daily! ![]()
Quickly as possible. The laundry machines in my building are constantly monopolized and the dryer is no bueno. I wait until I run out of socks, then throw everything but the kitchen sink into a Santa Claus sack and head to the laundromat across the street. It's a little more expensive, but it saves me time (I also set a timer) in the long run. I'd rather do several large loads at once than have to wait in line and do one load at a time in my building.
I'd never let it pile up the way I do if I had my very own machines.
Laundry isn't my favourite chore, but I've learned to deal because I like clean clothes. ![]()
I love this thread, ok nutsy pay attention to my Virgo. I wear my clothes based on what's in the hamper. Yep, the hamper is mostly dark, so I will wear dark today and tomorrow, then I only have one load of darks.
I have been know to wash my delicates and then at home get a broom, and thread the clothes over the broom handle, open up two cupboard doors and lay the broom over the open doors, instant clothes line. I place this broom over a heat register and go to bed, in the morning after the heat has run the clothes are dry. No lines, no clothes pins, take down broom, close cupboard doors. DONE.
Socks on the other hand just plain old bite.
In a pinch...., but it's not my fault...we have stupid paycards that the ganitor(?) has to be present for , for me to re-fill. He works 7-15, but is normally only there 7-7.10 and 14.45-15 so thats a hinder, and then I need to book the room, it's really nice and fast, but it's 3 hour a session and inbetween 8am -8pm and if I work it's like shitty to incorparate laundry time...so I usually take the 11-14 session, and just halfway, cause I start at 13 those days I'm up for laudry.wet wear is normal...I blowdryed my jeans the other day/ ironed ...it was uncomfortable.
I bought a pair of socks today.
I'm planning for five hours on Saturday to deal with clothes. And the kitchen. (My dishwasher died sometime last week!) My time-management skills are going to have to kick in soon because my temporary "oh there's plenty of time" ways just bought me a place in laundry & dish hell.
Ie: I bought a pair of socks because I have no clean ones. Seriously. And some leggings. And a dress. And a microwave dinner.
Seeeeeeee youuuuuu lateeeeerrrrrrr....
Thanks Kash:) I'm lazy...could have googled. I need to straighten up with mars in virgo.
Damp clothes are ok, and in the summer they feel nice...wet chiffon blouse out in super sun is great, dry in 10....but wet jeans are allways wet on the wrong places. The worst if you wear them out in the cold and you get frozen spotted pants.

I had to drastically change my laundry habits as I used to have a washer/dryer at home, and now I have a community machine in my building
problem is, we only have ONE set of machines for the building. So while I'm not at all worried about anyone stealing my stuff, I usually stick around til it's done because I don't want to hog the facilities. and sometimes I don't want to be out of the rotation for the dryer.
If I'm short on time, I'll just wash then hang it to dry on a rack, or when I'm really in a pinch I'll hand wash and rack dry.
I have wanted to try this but I always forget: hand wash then use a salad spinner to get most of the water out?
hahaha!
I agree Kashmiri - I think it would only work for small items but I'm curious to try it anyway, just to see what happens.
I thought of it last time I washed wool tights: they really DRIP!!! And you can't really wring them out or you risk weird stretching issues. blotting with a towel is always an option but then you need a space to dry the towel too.
=/
yeah. next time I'm going to try it.

When you do your laundry, do you often try to get it done as quickly as possible...or do you have the luxury of taking your time?
I live in an apartment complex, meaning you have a 50/50 chance of someone swiping your clothes if you are not present to watch out for them. So, naturally, I am a stickler about the time it takes to wash and dry, and I'm usually always down at the laundry room by the time the final minutes are counting down.
Today I put too much in the load, and I didn't want to do a second drying cycle when the first one had ended. Most of the clothes felt fairly dry. I just put on a pair of black jeans to wear to work. They're damp, but at least they're not wrinkled.
