"Elmhurst College put a question on its admissions application that won’t appear on any other school's application.

"Would you consider yourself to be a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) community?”

I can't believe your sex practices and preferences would be considered for admission to college.  Maybe you should be requires to write an essay on the topic. wink

It looks like they are going to give money away if you answer correctly.  I can't believe this, first they did this with ethnicity now they are going to do it with sexual orientation.  When the new wears off of this what will be next . . . .

Seriously we already addressed these issues with religion, race, gender, where do we go from here?

"to add to diversity"  BULLSHIT!!  10% of the population is homosexual in some way..  but that doesn't mean they all know it, for one..  and for two, who is to say that someone applying for college has even accepted their sexuallity yet?

i don't have sex on your classroom desk (not outside of fantacies anyway), why the fuck do you need to know who i'm fucking?

people should be accepted into positions and placements of every kind based on merit and ability..  not because she's a different color and he's a fag;  achive goals through hard work and ability, not social labeling.

no one should have the right to ask such a question on any sort of application, it is an invasion of privacy and just plain fucking rude.  nor do i think any organization should be allowed to ask about race or age for that matter..

Thanks rantares I was trying to keep my cool, that's why I asked what next.

Being really, really, really sarcastic here with this next statement: Maybe they only want students whose  brain's are between their legs.

If you have a good head on your shoulders who cares about anything else, just a sayin'

Yeah, that pisses me off, too. It's no one's business. If people want equal treatment, we have to quit pointing out there's anything different/odd about it. You don't ask someone if they're into S&M or roleplaying. What difference does it make TO YOU whom I have sex with? Go away.

It's the age of info. And the authorities want everything in writing.

Someone should go to court for this if answering is mandatory.

right on luci..  equality and labelling are counter-intuitive and i think being labelled will always work AGAINST equality, even when the "intended" reason is to achieve diversity...

if you really and truly select from a cross section AT RANDOM the outcome SHOULD be a perfect combination of all identities involved.

to do this in the name of political correctness is just blasphemous and idiotic..  since when is it ever politically correct to label and subjigate!?!?!?!  HELLO NAZIS!!!

I agree, college admissions should be about merit. When we're getting rid of  race, gender, locality, religion as factor in admissions, let's deep six legacy admissions as well.

I'm not sure how my sexuality equates to me getting money? Are they basically saying that they're will to pay me to have sex?

Seriously, this sounds like a marketing ploy and a bad one at that. When they start paying straight folk for being straight folk then let's have a conversation on the absurdity of payment for sexuality, otherwise they need to fire their director of marketing. This is silly.

Uhhh, I would call this another (there are so many of them) good idea done badly. I get the premise, and what they're trying to do but....I don't think this is going to work, nor is it logical in some ways.

Ahem, what if I came out as being bi-sexual and kinky? but later on in college identified as simply straight? would I get kicked out of school and loose my funding for being, well, me? half way thru an M.A.? I know of a few of my girlfriends that have run the full gamut of human sexuality, and are still learning about themselves, and I perceive that as perfectly normal. So I wonder how a rule like this would work for college admissions.

Personally, I know that being part of a minority group, or several as I am does affect my chances and odds, and how much privilege I have. But my sexuality, while also partly in a minority group would not be something I would personally want to out in order to get the kind of education I deserve to have. I'd find another way, or another school.

    Just my thoughts. : )

In California this is illegal, if I understand correctly.  I know the college in question isn't in California, but still.

    Not. Fucking. Cool.

Rantares, you keep earning the "Ranty" nickname.  I love you for that, though.  You are spot on.

It says it's not mandatory to answer the question, thank goodness.

There are probably some good reasons for people not to want to mention that on their permanent record of life here.

Ummm... I'm not American so I am not familiar with the legislation but isn't asking something like that unconstitutional in the first place?

My husband - "I'm going to tell 'em, I used to be a girl!  A girl named, Lila. Now give me that free tuition!  And when a lesbian comes up to me, I am going to say, no thanks! I only like chapstick lesbians!" :)

Some hilarious replies here, but seriously guys, this is just ghettoizing people for their difference - ie deviance! - from the majority. It's deeply patronising too, in the way PC usually is.

What the fuck does one's sexuality have to do with whether you may benefit from  college education, or how much money your parents may have?

I find the phraseology particulaely coy and nauseating: "Would you consider yourself to be a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) community?”  That whole 'community' can makes me sick - as if all Muslims, gays or disabled people are automatically part of some exclusive club. Might as well say I'm part of the 'brunette community' - gah!
