Hauntingly beautiful songs!
posted 3 years ago in Lounge
@ Daemoness - I love Sarah McLachlan! I listen to that very version of I Love You all the time, almost every day, it's just so perfect. She doesn't have a song that I don't like but this is one of the best ones.
I love Snow Patrol a whole lot these days. Two songs stand out for me as hauntingly beautiful: Signal Fire and Crack the Shutters.

The perfect words never crossed my mind,
Cuz there was nothin' in there but you.
I felt every ounce of me screaming out,
But the sound was trapped deep in me.
All I wanted just sped right past me,
While I was rooted fast to the earth,
I could be stuck here for a thousand years,
Without your arms to drag me out.
[Chorus:]
There you are standing right in front of me
There you are standing right in front of me
All this fear falls away to leave me naked,
Hold me close, cuz I need you to guide me to safety.
No, I don't want to wait forever [x2]
In the confusion and the aftermath,
You are my signal fire.
The only resolution and the only joy,
Is the faint spark of forgiveness in your eyes.
[Chorus (x2)]
No, I don't want to wait forever [x3]

You cool your bed-warm hands down on the broken radiator,
And when you lay them freezing on me, I mumble "can you wake me later?"
But I don't really want you to stop and you know it so it doesn't stop you
And run your hands from my neck to my chest
Crack the shutters open wide, I wanna bathe you in the light of day
And just watch you as the rays tangle up around your face and body
I could sit for hours finding new ways to be awed each minute
Cuz' the daylight seems to want you just as much as I want you
It's been minutes, it's been days, it's been all I will remember
Happy lost in your hair and the cold side of the pillow
Your hills and valleys are mapped by my intrepid fingers
And in a naked slumber, I dream all this again
Crack the shutters open wide, I wanna bathe you in the light of day
And just watch you as the rays tangle up around your face and body
I could sit for hours finding new ways to be awed each minute
Cuz' the daylight seems to want you just as much as I want you
Crack the shutters open wide, I wanna bathe you in the light of day
And just watch you as the rays tangle up around your face and body
I could sit for hours finding new ways to be awed each minute
Cuz' the daylight seems to want you just as much as I want you.

When I'm at the pearly gates
This'll be on my videotape
My videotape
My videotape
Mephistopheles is just beneath
And he's reaching up to grab me
This is one for the good days
And I have it all here in
Red, blue, green
Red, blue, green
You are my centre when I spin away
Out of control on videotape
On videotape
On videotape
On videotape
This is my way of saying goodbye
Because I can't do it fact to face
So I'm talking to you before
No matter what happens now
I won't be afraid
Because I know
Today has been the most perfect day I have ever seen
Radiohead "Videotape" from In Rainbows
My grandaughter Bella lost her grandpa on her dads side late last summer. At first when my daughter became pregnant he didn't think his son was the father. Then Bella came out looking just like his wife. She's an exceptionally charming little girl, and he fell in love, like the rest of us. Two years ago he was diagnosed with cancer, and this man's man with no time for women started planning trips to amusement parks and Nascar races and helicopter rides. Anything he thought this little girl should see. His bucket list. This song came out about the same time and I'll never be able to listen to it without thinking of Greg.

Enjoy x2.

@chad Nice. I wonder what your thoughts are on the Enigma classic, you must know this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEh2N5hmPVM&a=hmkYRqBEb3o&playnext_from=ML
I wonder how it skipped my mind it's very fitting for this post. It's not a heartbreaking song which I prefer but it's very erotic and beautiful on it's own. I love how the spoken part is all about morals and lust.
Yo La Tengo "Autumn Sweater"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIkMeaAfIRw
so so so so so poignant and beautiful, it takes me back to a place I'd give anything to visit again, but those days are gone. Bye bye, maybe next life
"When I heard the knock on the door
I couldn't catch my breath
Is it too late to call this off
We could slip away, wouldn't that be better
Me with nothing to say, and you in your autumn sweater
I tried my best to hide
In a crowded room, it's nearly possible
I wait for you, oh, most patiently
So I looked for your eyes
And the waves looked like they'd pour right out of them
I'll try hard, I'll try always
But it's a waste of time
It's a waste of time if I can't smile easily
Like in the beginning
In the beginning..."
@notintofeet: VERY nice. It is from the VHS videos "Remember the Future". You can get these videos on DVD, now. All of them very tasteful, notintofeet, if you have not done so already. Scorpions and Enigma are my #1 and #2, respectively.
Beautiful.
Grizzly Bear- Knife;
although this whole album (Yellow House) is hauntingly beautiful in its entirety!
oooh, love this thread.. Will go back and listen to every single song. Meanwhile..

Love Sarah McLachlan, too, @Daemoness and @ScorpioMoonGirl.
----Sarah McLachlan singing Joni Mitchell's River. She kills it...

----Sarah McLachlan's Fallen. The lyrics rock. This live version is amazing (tho live at MacWorld, unfort)
Heaven bend to take my hand
And lead me through the fire
Be the long awaited answer
To a long and painful fight
Truth be told I've tried my best
But somewhere along the way
I got caught up in all there was to offer
And the cost was so much more than I could bear
Though I've tried, I've fallen...
I've sunk so low
I have messed up
Better I should know
So don't come round here
And tell me I told you so...
We all begin with good intent
When love was raw and young
We believed that we could change ourselves
The past could be undone
But we carry on our backs the burden
Time always reveals
In the lonely light of morning
The wound that would not heal
It's the bitter taste of losing everything
That I have held so dear.
Heaven bend to take my hand
Nowhere left to turn
I'm lost to those I thought were friends
To everyone I know
Oh they turned their heads embarassed
Pretend that they don't see
But it's one missed step
You slip before you know it
And there doesn't seem a way to be redeemed
"Ashoken Farewell" Jay Unger, main theme from the Ken Burns' Civil War series.
It came out very recently, and its mood perfectly reflects this Cardinal T square - Arcade Fire, "The Suburbs":

One of my personal favorites, Travis, "Sing".
I just spent hours listening to all the videos of Joni, and all her songs are incredibly beautiful, but I chose this to post because the quality is so pristine. She is such an amazing artist and can transport me back decades with the first note she sings.
Joni Mitchell .. California
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q4foLKDlcE@tinaroma - Fallen is one of the best, lyrics-wise.
Sadly, she's not so popular in Europe, at least outside UK. Some people know "Angel," as it was somewhat of a hit, but that's about it. She's not HUGE, like in USA and Canada. I've been a fan of her incredible music for ever since high school. Back in the 1990-ties I went to the record store and wanted to get the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy CD. I asked if they have it, and the clerk said "Sarah McLachlan? You meant to say Sarah Brightman, right?" When I told him that NO, I MEANT Sarah McLachlan, he told me that no, they don't have it, and he hasn't heard of her, ever. D'oh! So I had to order the CD's on Amazon. Back then, there was no YouTube either
She's still relatively unheard of and many people have no idea who she is. Such a shame, because it also means she most probably will never do an extended European tour and I will never get to see her live. I've watched her live performances online and they'e always so emotional and so brilliant. Few people in the world have such talent.
brizo, same here on the Sarah TV sighting.
I'd been searching through the TV several years ago just to see what channels I had in my room, and I happened on a pre-taped concert in a semi-private looking hall. Her voice captivated me, I dropped the remote and just watched and listened with my mouth hanging open. ![]()
Just heard California. So pure and light but powerful. Love her words about peace. And in general. "Gonna see the folks I dig. Might even kiss a sunset pink."
That's hard to fathom about Sarah McLachlan, ScorpioMoonGirl. Maybe the more buttoned up sensibility. She slays me.
When I needed it a couple years ago, those two saved me. Wish I were to be online enough. want listen to all of Joni, too.
I used to listen to Sarah Mclachlan's I Love You every night, too! It was the BT remix, though. I'm so glad I ran across this thread. I lost that mp once when my computer crashed and didn't know the name.
This is a link to the remix. You have to scroll through the first 2 minutes. Boy does that time in my life come crashing back. :)
You won't be disappointed, belle.
Also, I love to watch the video for World on Fire when I am feeling down. Not only a great song, but such a brilliant way to help those less fortunate! It isn't a joke, she actually did donate all the money. You have to watch the video closely. it always makes me feel like my life isn't so hard after all.
This song makes me want to romance so bad it just sends tingles all over me!!!

@Togi.I'm with you.Nic Cave, over and over.Saw him live once at The Palace in Hollywood in the early 90's.Also ran into Nic Cag at said event.I think he was wearing a yellow suit.
Latter Days, Over the Rhine- probably my favorite song of theirs. sorry i didn't link yesterday, was looking for the higher audio quality recording.
What a beautiful piece of heartache
This has all turned out to be
Lord knows we've learned the hard way
All about healthy apathy
I use these words pretty loosely
There's so much more to life than words
There is a me you would not recognize, dear
Call it the shadow of myself
And if the music starts before I get there
Dance without me, you dance so gracefully
I really think I'll be okay
They've taken a toll, these latter days
Nothing like sleeping on a bed of nails
Nothing much here but our broken dream
Oh, but baby, if all else fails
Nothing is ever quite what it seems
And I'm dying inside to leave you
With more than just cliches
There is a me you would not recognize, dear
Call it the shadow of myself
And if the music starts before I get there
Dance without me, you dance so gracefully
I really think I'll be okay
They've taken their toll, these latter days
They've taken their toll, these latter days
Tell them it's real
Tell them it's really real
I just don't have much left to say
They've taken their toll, these latter days
They've taken their toll, these latter days <!--Lyrics End-->
How I could forget this one ? Totally captivated me in 2004, and has been haunting me ever since, the Serbian entry to Eurovision Song Contest 2004, Lane Moje :
