A while back Kashmiri suggested to me that I do roller derby, which is something I always though was pretty awesome!  I thought the closest teams were in Austin, which is about an hour away...having kids and all, I thought it wouldn't be do-able.  Well, turns out, they created a team in my parts (Killeen/Temple/Waco area) and practices are only 20 mins away.  It's a legitimate team already, with a full schedule and all.  On their website it says they're always looking for women interested in becoming a team member.

I'm soooo excited at the thought of doing it, it's something I really want to do.  But like ALWAYS, I'm trying to talk myself out of it (what if you're not good at it, what if you don't have time...blah..blah..blah).  Why the hell I do this, I don't know, but I do it a lot.  (Perhaps the Cappy moon, terrified of failure.  But I have sun, merc, N.Node in Leo in the 10th and I think it may be a chance to have a little fun and shine =)

Can one of ya'll tear me a new asshole please??  Thanks lol

I was going to be more on the supportive side --- I know a bunch of women involved in roller derby in Chicago (windy city rollers), and the strong point I can see is that they are all the best of friends.  They all really love the experience, and not everyone who gets involved does all the really tough skating, but they are this really close-knit fun group.  All of them who joined it seem to be really grateful for the good friendships they make.  So that could be a really fun aspect, plus your husband and kids would probably love to come out and see you skate. :)

does that help? lol, just kidding! You don't need to be torn an new asshole, you need to be convinced how great your ass will look after rollin' around for hours on end--plus they are venues that PERFECT for bringing your girls too--

"Look at our Leo mum, kicking butt!"

    Shell,

Defy yourself.  You're only second-guessing the experience you will have.  Believe me.  My favorite place on Earth is Disneyland, and even on a day like this when I'm convinced I am going to go there after work, come 3PM (my end-shift) there will be these little voices trying to tell me stupid reasons why I can't go--defy them for your own sake and go.  This might just be a new and exciting direction for you, don't let second-thoughts take that away.  Because you might regret NOT doing it.  Some of those occasions when I DON'T go to the park, I'll be at home on the internet, eating dinner, and thinking to myself 'you could be there right now, there's nothing wrong with you, it's a perfect day, you could be walking through your laughing place and loving it...you pussy' and it usually makes me feel more stubborn and defiant against those voices the next day.  Like today.  I know they will be there before I leave and I will quietly, even politely say, 'thank you and fuck you' and go.  Live each day like it's your last and do the things you really want to do.

    Have fun!!!

"what if you're not good at it"

You'll be a little sore and have some bruises on your butt, oooh big deal.

"what if you don't have time"

You seem to have the time to sit around and worry about it.  If you didn't have any time, it wouldnt even be an issue because you'd be doing whatever it is you're so busy with instead of fretting.

"Can one of ya'll tear me a new asshole please"

No, there is nothing wrong with your old asshole, it will have to do."

Go Shell Go! I love the Kash comment "you need to be convinced how great your ass will look after rollin around for hours on end". Nice one!

One of the ways I get past the initial fear of doing something new is that I promise myself I will go once and see what it's all about. Usually after that first step, the initial fear has passed and I'm too pumped for the next time to worry.

    You go girl! xo

Mars in Leo is going direct in your 10th--you can be a leader! You can yell at teammates, too, and no one looks like they're going to cry. It will be a good release for just about anything. Plus you can make your own outfits.

Jessica, thanks for that viewpoint!  I've been such a lonesome dove lately, thinking that I need to get my ass out there and make new friends, lol.  I have Saturn just entering my 12th and I've been super-reclusive.

Chrispito, OKAY THEN, I'LL FUCKING DO IT!!  haha, you made me lol.  I loved it though!  I also thought it'd be a pretty cool thing for my girls to experience.  Seeing their momma all fearless, pushing people around! lol

Nutsy, you totally understand my thought process. "Because you might regret NOT doing it."  Really Nutsy, that's my life story!  Not to play my violin about it, I take FULL responsibilty for being a chicken shit at times.

    Hey shell,

You gotta tell us your 'war' stories of the derby antics, though!  I'm sure you will be making memories before too long!

Shell, it's not a lifetime commitment. If it doesn't work for your life, if you suck at it, or if you hate it, you can bow out gracefully knowing you didn't give in to your fear and avoid the challenge.

What if you love it? What if it adds to your self confidence, your fitness, and your mood? What if you become a wonderful example to your children of breaking out, accepting new challenges and excelling? That is every bit as possible as it not working out.

Trying and deciding it's not for you is NOT failure. On the other hand, not trying something you're enthusiastic about trying because you're afraid smells a lot more like a failure to me.

Alicia, that's a good little promise you give yourself.  Good idea!

What Alicia said, especially!  Just go and watch them and I bet that will help you decide one way or another.  I always said I would NEVAH EVAH sky-dive, until I drove one of my sons and his friends and watched them.  Seeing the joy and ecstasy on their faces on landing, as well as how the process worked, convinced me that this is something I will definitely do someday....

That's right, goddess, a lot of the women I know have just skated one season or part of a season, but they never lose their affiliation with the group, or their friends.

Now let's think of a derby name for her! :)

    Silent Shot Shell?

    Shell Destroya?

    Armor-Piercing Shell?  LOL

Goddess, good point.  You're exactly right.  Because of how many times I've talked myself out of stuff, I do already feel a bit of a failure.  So now, I go into things feeling like a failure already.  Ugh!  Thank you for pointing that out.

Darlin', you've got your Capricorn and it colors your self-perception. You're smart, strong and able, and you seldom seem to see it. You cappy folks are so hard on yourselves!

I don't really understand people's concept of failure anyway, or why it's such an awful fate. I've tried many things that didn't work out, I look for things to learn and grow from the experience along the way each time. So how is that bad?

The fear I am familiar with, for sure. I try to fight through it though, because it always seems to make my world smaller. That is a much bigger loss in my eyes than the potential for sucking at a new venture and moving on.

    Go Shell Go!

Actually before I got to the names I was thinking of that Wings song "Helen Wheels"

Also - there's a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence (wikipedia link, only mildly not work safe) in LA named Dixie Wrecked.  I had to read that one out loud (don't, if you have an audience) before I got it.

And no, darling, Roller Derby is not subtle.

Bananas, thanks!  I actually have been wanting to see Whip It!  Especially since it's about a Texas team in Austin.  On the back of the DVD cover, there's a guy wearing a University of Texas Longorns shirt, and that was enough to sell me.  Lol!

I e-mailed the head honcho, and she told me to bring a mouth-piece tonight if I want to try it out a little bit, or she said I can just watch.

    I'm taking the mouth-piece!

Thank you Shannon!  I'm so excited!  I just hope I don't suck too bad, and they ban me from coming to the next practice..lmao!!  j/j (kind of!)
