Well I don't know really. I think it's ridiculous that people are so scandalized by marijuana at this point but I don't like the idea of granting him special favor because of his status.
It reminds me of the snapshots of crotches not too long ago. Can we be done with celebrity scandal some time? I'm just disgusted by all of it. Disgusted by someone with so much going for him doing something so stupid. And a little disgusted with myself for being intrigued with how it is all going to play out.
My Gemini mind is having fun with this one and arguing both sides until I can't really get any words to make it out of my head. :)
I'd be willing to bet that all will be forgiven and he will compete again though regardless of what is right or what should be. He is a valuable commodity and won't be tossed aside so easily I think.
How in the world could they sucessfully prosecute him after the fact? With no physical evidence. He could have been smoking lettuce for all they know. Someone is blowing smoke and it ain't Michael.
Either change the rule, or hold fast to the rule. I'm okay either way. Even if he's disqualified from further competition, I seem to like him even more now. Er, because now we actually have something in common (a puff o' the hot stuff at 22)!
Well... This is sticky, isn't it? I mean - come on, this is pot, so it's not like he's getting any physical enhancement out of the drug. I think it's irresponsible that the rules are poorly written, and irresponsible that he didn't observe the rules he was subject to.
*sigh* It's pot. Why do we care?
I feel sad for him. But I guess this is his dose of reality - it must be a very weird transition, from no-one knowing your name, to the whole world wanting a piece of you. I am not going to get all high and mighty about pot - please, I was a teenager in the 70's. If you ever watched "That 70's Show", I can assure you, that show told it all. My friends lives revolved around pot - there was no internet, no xbox, just led zeppelin, pink floyd, and lots of pot smoking
Do I think he should be disqualified? I have to say i hope he is not, purely because I like the guy. I realize that is not a logical answer, but my own truthful one.
when i heard this, the first thing i thought was that it kind of debunks the arguement that pot use fosters lack of acheivement.
When I first heard about it I thought, well, that explains his eating habits. ![]()
I think drugs should be legal.
Dorothy, my husband and I looove the 70's show. Mila Kunis is a Leo in real life, and my gosh, she definitely plays a Leo on the show..lol.
I just wonder what he was thinking letting somebody take a picture of him doing that!?? Surely he must've thought it was a possibility?? I don't think pot is a big deal, but don't be stupid enough to do it with others when you're name is on the line!
Is he supposed to have not done drugs ever per Olympic rules? Or if he stops doing drugs a year or so before competition, and tests clean, does it matter?
I don't know if he even wants to go back to the Olympics again. Odds are it doesn't get any better than how he's already done it. Maybe he just wants to rest on his laurels and relax and party like a 22-year-old for once.
I think that he is an young man, who is too full of himself at the moment. However, I think that his mom and sisters will give him hick. I think that the laws regarding marijuana are idiotic. So no to banning from the Olympics, no to arrest. But I feel the same way for all people smoking pot. It is a stupid law.
I think drugs should be legal, too. We own ourselves right?
I do not believe in special privledge, but I hope this sheds light on how overboard we have gone with our laws, and, in the idea that doing normal things are incorrect or are anyone else's business in the first place.
I was under the impression that it was only against Olympic rules to be under the influence of performance enhancing drugs at the time of competition. If that isn't the case it should be.
oh good grief, it reminds me of the congressional hearings about steroid use in baseball. who cares? There are nearly a million non-violent pot smokers in prison in the USA that we have to pay for, plus the expense to catch and prosecute them. But 911 is so busy they can't send help? Puh-leeze. And this particular pot smoker broke how many world records? No to disqualified, no to arrested, dump the law - it's a waste of resources and people's lives.
Well, I'm sure he knew the rules, so if he broke them he must have a reason for it. We all have our reasons when we brake a rule, sometimes it's just more important to see what's beyond the broken rule than keep doing things inside the rule, especially when we already achieved our goal inside of it. Also, who knows what the rule stands for - in his mind, that he needs to break free from. Cereal for kids doesn't fit anymore, of course, but there are many other products out there...it shouldn't be too difficult for him if he wants to find another one. Some people end up creating their own product line and make millions of it, especially now that young people feel the star is just like them.
I was telling my husband about this thread, and I said "It's not like he's getting any performance enhancement out of weed," and then he said "Well no, unless they start putting twinkies at the end of the laps..."
I died. lolz
the govt could legalize and sell marijuana instead of taxing the populace. it works with liquor and tobacco. in my state you can only buy liquor from state-run shops.
The government should legalize most, if not, all street drugs and tax them accordingly. Prohibition was a wholesale failure, except for the likes of Al Capone and numerous other elements that made big bucks from the black market it created.

"Sources say the owner of the bong was trying to sell it on eBay for as much as $100,000.."
Eight arrested in Michael Phelps case</font>
Guy above was one of them obviously...
I have to laugh, what fools!
The good sheriff Lott has come to his senses and decided against charging Phelps, claiming not enough evidence as the reason.
I'm so GLAD we didn't have cell phones or video cameras back in my day! God am I glad.
But really Phelps should realize that all the hanger-ons around him would love to get a piece of the action. I mean when you're rich and famous who can you trust?
He's not an ordinary person anymore. He's in a fish bowl and with the fame and the bucks comes parasites and sociopaths out of the wood work. He needs to get street smart and only smoke around the dog. They can't whip out the camcorders or get their little paws on the cell phone button pads correctly.

Should he be disqualified from the next Olympics per the rules? Should he be arrested? Should no rules count because he is 22 years old and a star?
What's your call on this?
