Murdoch: We will charge for all news sites
posted 7 months ago in News and Current Events
As a content provider myself, I believe in paying for the goods and services I use.
I don't know how we're gonna turn this ship around though.
People have gotten used to free rides all over the place and feel a sense of entitlement.
I think Pluto in Capricorn will bring the answer.
I don't like this at all Elsa!
Well people who work like to be paid and businesses cannot stay in business (and hire people) when they not making money...
I will pay. Obviously what news I expose myself to will be much more limited, which I see as a potential downside, personally. Nevertheless, news organizations have to have some way of changing their business model. Everything is changing, isn't it? I'm still grieving the loss of so many good newspapers across the country.
people deserve to be paid for their work, it's true, but you know after a blissful week away on an island without newspapers or tv.. no news.. that was the most relaxed me and my lovely man have been in ages..our mode of delivering news.. i.e. watch helplessly on live news channels while people suffer.... is so-oh stressful!! No, won't pay for news. Most of it's biased and inaccurate anyway IMHO.
The annoying thing is that as a blogger, I cannot pass on paid news site information links. I will pay for something if I want it (on the other hand, if I read the site once in a blue moon I'm not paying), but it is frustrating not to be able to share and enjoy, if you know what I mean. It's kind of Internet foot-shooting.
The latest:
News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch has suggested the company's online newspaper pages will be invisible to Google users when it launches its new paid content strategy.
Google won't be able to find News Corp sites under new plans
He claimed that readers who randomly reach a page via an internet search hold little value to advertisers.
When asked by Sky News Australia's political editor David Speers why News Corp has not stopped Google from finding its content, Mr Murdoch replied: "I think we will."
He cited the Wall Street Journal as an example of where only the first paragraph comes up on search engines and is free. Anything after that is subscription-based.
He is planning to make newspapers like The Times and Sunday Times chargeable online.
I think if he leads others will follow. I also don't blame him one bit.
Why not? No one's paying for the print versions!
This statement was a little extreme to me, though:
He claimed that readers who randomly reach a page via an internet search hold little value to advertisers.
So many people are searching for things all the time and site rankings help with this. I have found great pages through web searches. On top of that, however, I block adds through my web browser, so I don't see them anyway and therefore can't click. I wonder what he makes of addons like that, or if it affects anything for his sites in a big way.
I will probably get my news secondhand from people who blog about the news. I'm too concerned with necessities like rent and groceries to spend money on news beyond my local paper.

New York Times Ready to Charge Online Readers
I don't care about "the news." I won't pay. It seems mostly fabricated and biased to me anyway.
I think it'll work, there are enough people who will pay a yearly fee for cnn.com. I wouldn't only because there are a thousand places to get the same news for free as long as you aren't particular about credibility.
I mainly catch the news (TV,online) to hear of people who have it worse than me in the world, it makes me feel better about my situation. That way I don't catch too much negativity or feel that I'm being shit on by life.
Without the news-sites to give me those examples, I'll have to just observe my neighbors instead. Haha!
People who believe X will pay for the news source that leans X. People who believe Y will pay for the news source that leans Y. And never the twain shall meet.
Well, my first instinct is to say that if I can't find news online without a ridiculous fee, I'll simply watch it on TV or purchase a newspaper when my interest warrents it sufficiently (at 50 cents a copy, still).
Some things I'm willing to pay for as a serivce if I believe in it, for my own convienience/entertainment, but those things are also the first cut if my budget gets tight. For instance, I love Elsa and her astrology classes, but I couldn't sign up this time around. There will be other chances, though, and I'll still try my best to tip when I can, because I take away knowledge and she deserves to see fruit for her labors. I strongly believe in this.
So long story longer, I guess it depends on the source and how invested I am in it personally. I know Elsa. I believe in her integrity. On the other hand, news is really biased and where you get it determins the slant you get, which may not always be worth paying for.
You're welcome! I think it makes sense a the bottom line though - people pay for what interests them. If these news places are interesting and worth it, they'll be sucessful.

I don't know what you think, I think this was inevitable. Further, I can see an upside to this...
