My husband made this remark after insulting a few actors for what he calls their "moron-ism".   His idea is that we have these people who are wonderful actors. They're incredibly talented but then they just go insane, getting on TV to pontificate about things like war and politics that that know nothing about.

Actors do like to be seen of course. Perhaps there is no such thing as enough attention but after years and years of blathering like fools, it really does affect your ability to enjoy them in a role because their private life has literally eclipsed their talent which used to be the focus.

I think these actors are ill advised to over-exposure themselves and I just wonder what others think. I know my husband thinks that everyone is good at something and he doesn't know why they don't just do it. For example, he is a very good soldier, one of the best in the world. I am a good storyteller and able to help people in their lives.

What are you good at?  Do you stick to it or are you lost at this point?

I have to agree that some people never touch upon that one thing they excell at and this is often sad when they miss it for their whole lives. I often meet people who have had dreams of doing something with their lives that they are clearly suited for but who never indulge that dream and chase it.

I am an artist and no matter what else I try to do I come back to what I do best and have been lucky enough to do what I do best in my career.  A gift is important to honor and many, many people have ignored or lost sight of their gifts.

I feel it is never too late to chase your dreams, however, in some way. I hope people will find a way to keep their dreams alive.

I agree people should stick to what they are good at. But, what if they don't know what that is. How would you send them in the direction of finding it?

Yes I do what I'm good at and keep out of places where I would make a fool of myself, meanwhile admiring those who do excel in those areas.

People have preached to me about what makes a good this or that (what I do) and I can see their inexperience very, very quickly.

I'm a good communicator. That's actually a skill that will get you through in most places, including my current day job. However, I'd rather use my skill for different things, ones I really care about, if I could.

Agree with not knowing that it is you want to do creates problems with not doing what you feel you should be doing.

But, I also think that in the creative field, it's easy to just move from one medium to another, and be relatively good at it.

I like to think of people as having a "bar graph" of skills. They might have an extraordinary amount of talent in 1-2 places, and a couple of lower amounts in others

    I agree.

And on a side note, I dislike knowing so much personal info about an actor. I can't concentrate on his/her role properly because I dislike him for something the media probably invented. Ugh

I'm good at making music. I stick to it. I love it. It's a discipline and a cultural tradition that I feel deeply invested in. I am happy but it was by no means easy for me to reach this level of peace about it.

I think a lot of people are confused about what is fulfilling as opposed to what is ingratiating. There are many things we do out of fulfillment that we overlook because it's not glamorous or socially acceptable or too obscure, etc.

One of my strongest points is knowing what is best for other people! I'm never wrong about this!

To be honest I'm not very good at what I'm not good at. :) I have thought about other areas to work in but had to rule them out. Nothing left but the road i chose. I do take exception to having to excel at it every moment of the day.  I have no interest in perfecting my mountain in 5 years time. I think that's my saturn square sun energy though. Yes I'm going up but I'm also going to take a break and find balance on the way. I help to tell stories and evoke emotion in the viewer as a video editor.

I think people are happier having room to improve, then being so fricken good that they are bored to tears about it.

I agree totally about actors - why on earth the media think people's opinions on world affairs are of any relevance or interest, just because they appear on TV or in films pretending to be someone else, beats me surprised

And I also agree that knowing too much about them can ruin any piece of film etc. I now can't watch Mel Gibson in anything. Meeting 'stars' is very overrated too - most are not very pleasant people and a lot are pompous bores. I once met Trevor Howard and I've never been able to watch Brief Encounter again!

ETA  I'm good with language/ writing, I'm a good researcher too, and I'd prefer to stick to those things. But I have to do a bit of photography to survive... and wish I were better at the technical side of it

I say a person's gotta have room to grow. I think the situation with movie stars highlights more a lack of humility in areas they don't know shit about. A person that doesn't know about something that knows they don't know about it is much easier to handle than someone that thinks they do and doesn't. One is ignorant and the other is a moron.

If I'd just stuck with what I knew I wouldn't know and have the perspective I do now. But I'm willing to admit ignorance if the situation warrants it.

I was just telling my kids this tonight actually :) I told them they should do something they're good at, something they love, and something that can help other people. To me, those are the top three criteria for living a good life, doing meaningful work.

I discovered tonight that the two things in the world thta intimidate me the most are playing music in front of people and teaching: the two things I love most and am the best at doing. And they do help people too! :) I have to MAKE myself do them, isn't that weird? My Mars is retro in Leo close to my MC in Leo. Maybe the retro energy has to do with this? rMars is also square my moon and Uranus, so maybe there's a bit of an energy block when my emotions (fear of failure) get involved? Square with Uranus possibly blocks sudden action? Not sure...but I do make myself do it anyway because I am, without fail, always glad I showed up. I feel fulfilled when I teach and play music, but something in my fights against it at all costs. Thankfully I have a strong will! I think maybe my Mars square moon goes the other way and Mars tells my moon "yeah....we're not going to overreact :) You need to move anyway."

    Worked so far...

And about the actors, it doesn't bother me at all. They're still citizens. I'm not sure why they would know any less about politics than the average American. If only the Voice of the American people were so bold and clear to our lawmakers! People used to get up on platforms back in the day and rally their communities to the side of justice (or otherwise, of course) I think that's a powerful thing that makes America a special place.

I don't think actors should have to keep to themselves about what's going on in their own country. Even if they sound stupid doing it. To me, that's just a freedom of speech thing. I mean, any jackass on any of the major news streams can be called a "pundit" or "expert" in something inane because they wear a suit and the words under their face say so...not sure how actors/entertainers are much worse (??)

I'm sorry I haven't had time to read all the comments but: I don't understand how a person can be a grown adult and not know what they're good at.

I don't mean to sound snitty, I truly don't understand. Doesn't compute. I have seen my share of suffering and hard times but I always knew what I was good at, even when other people told me I was a loser going nowhere in life (thank you, highschool biology teacher).

I guess since I always did my own thing despite what everyone else was doing, I can't 'get' this?

    Is this another topic entirely?

"They're incredibly talented but then they just go insane, getting on TV to pontificate about things like war and politics that that know nothing about." I agree. It's a pet peeve. "Dude, you read scripts that other people write for a living; why exactly are you an expert on global warming, again?"

I've usually done what I'm good at, and I've usually done very well with it.

What if you don't like doing what you're good at?

What if what you're good at won't make you a living?

    Then what?
