I will conserve and use pub. transpo. , but I think we are forestalling the inevitable. Our spread-out, suburban, petroleum based culture is doomed. We should be investing in upgrading and maintaining our existing rail systems, because alot of people are going to be cut off, when the shit hits the fan.

Hmmm...wondering if people will eventually be forced to make a choice...

I live in a highly sustainable city so getting around on public transit is reliable, and fairly (not perfectly) well priced. We have five different forms of public transit, and they are building more to reach smaller neighborhoods as I write. Bus, train, a small bullet train for a particular neighborhood to connect to other buses and trains, a streetcar, and a tram.

One of the reasons I love living here is the great public transportation. I think it's won some awards in the last year or so.

I despise driving for environmental and personal reasons, and I wish that my city wasn't the exception but the rule nationally. :(

I haven't driven my own car in about 8 yrs. : )

I wonder if the same stats are happening in the US - ie numbers taking driving tests are falling, while bus and train travel is soaring:

prices jumped 20 cents here in the past week..  we're at $4 now.  oh joy. 

My response ? Constant seething. I can't help getting angry about the rapid escalation, and the squeezing-down of resources. I'm trying not to have a stroke over it.

It makes me wanna protest!

Gas prices are going up because oil prices are going up. Oil is going up because it is pegged to the dollar and the dollar is going down.

We have the lowest gas price in the nation - $3.07

I guess it'll be shock when it us...all at once?

It's $4.27 over here. There was talk of a vanpool at work, but I'll believe it when I see it. If it does happen, I'll be happy to jump aboard. I miss public transportation.

Remember during the last election everyone was saying gas should be $5?  Looks like they'll get their wish!

I stopped mowing the other side of my yard last year when it went up to $4 a gallon.  I have three acres.  so now about 1 1/2 gets mowed.  The neighbors aren't happy, she's saying mosquitos, but they have woods behind their house and I've never griped about it.

Conservation seems the wisest choice, regardless of gas prices. Since deregulation of the commodities markets in Jan. of 2000, we have been hurt by the intentional manipulation of gas prices.

Gas in Australia is about $1.50 (AUD) per litre- more expensive than in Canada. Sydney's public transit is far better than Toronto's public transit but that doesn't mean less people drive here!  They've got good bike lanes here, which is nice to see.
