The Planet Earth in Your Astrology Chart

I've always wondered if the Earth has any role to play in astrology. One thought is that it is the true ruler of the sign Taurus. (That would leave only Virgo without it's true ruler - some say "Vulcan", not yet discovered?) Anyway that is another topic!

The Earth is located 180 degrees from your Sun according to Heliocentric astrology. (One source I found said ninety degrees from ascendant - but that seems to be a minority) So if you are a Virgo, you have the Earth in Pisces. Here I found some interesting information online (the link is given below):

    • Earth is the soul-centered ruler of Sagittarius. Its position can be found 180 degrees from the natural position of the sun.
    • The Earth's position in the chart represents a solid path that each and every individual has to pass with each incarnation.
    • It is also known as a fusion of one's animal nature and the Soul. Wherever it lays in the chart, there is bound to be a big conflict. In fact the arrows of Sagittarius target the field of the Earth.
    • The Sun, in turn, provides the creative essence that has to be brought into each incarnation. Earth which is opposite in position of the Sun shows points where the creativity has to be expressed.
    • Saturn works parallel to the Earth and share the same mental nature that is connected by the Law of Karma.

In my chart the Earth would be in Gemini, in the 5th house. It seems to ring true that it is a source of conflict AND where my creativity needs to be expressed. I also read that it points to where/how by house/sign one serves humanity. Pretty neat!

Where is the Earth in your chart? Does this ring true?

Oh No!! - not another planet for my Virgo-Pisces axis.  My head is gonna explode!

Earth would be in Virgo/2d house right in the middle of my Uranus/Pluto conjunction and opposite my Sun/Mars conjunction in Pisces/8th.  So yes to source of conflict and probably to where my creativity needs to be expressed (2d house is a job right?  I've been thinkin' I need to get one of those. ) But since I've already got those oppositions embedded there, it's a little hard to separate out what would be a potential earth influence as opposed to what else is going on.  Probably others will weigh in more usefully - I'm looking forward to seeing opinions on this.  I've never heard of it before.

You come up with really interesting topics, Vajra!  Thanks.

If that is the case, Earth would be on my 7th house in Libra... Likely conjuncting my Pluto... Oooooh... partnerships... That sounds so accurate - at least that's a huge point of struggle for me.

I never heard of this, but it's very interesting. for me that would make Earth at 1st degree Virgo, conj. my Leo MC . I don't have planets in earth signs, so this would be the first. I guess it means  I need to express myself more creativly in my career, or maybe in life's work in general.

Earth through the Signs - another site with good info

I have Earth in Sagittarius in the 11/12th house, depending on the house system. 12th house (Equal) suggests yet another helping of mutable energy/duality! That could be why I find the concept "slippery," I don't know where to begin in terms of how it affects my creativity. I'll also chime in with my oppositions there (Gemini Sagittarius axis) and having difficulty isolating the Earth input in that energy exchange.

Since you mentioned Saturn works in tandem with Earth as in karma, do you think the numerology life path concept would mesh well with this one? I have life path 8, which seemed very Saturn/Capricorn - the description didn't resonate with me much at the time, although I acknowledge I am Saturnian, Saturn rules my chart and makes contact with a good handful of planets natally.

(inspired by What is your life path number - from the boards)

I thought the rising sign was 'Earth.'  Interesting.

    Hi Balletlover70

I checked Astrodienst and it doesn't show where to add Earth, unless I missed it, however as Vajra wrote

" Its position can be found 180 degrees from the natural position of the sun."

just pencil it into the chart exactly opposite your Sun degree.

Some use the icon that looks just like the Part of Fortune. I have seen other alternatives as well. I think myself that the icon should be exactly like the POF only using a square instead of the circle. Either that or a square instead of a circle with the dot in the middle for the Sun. That's just me though and I have not seen either like that :)

Wow Tam, great article on the 6th house! thanks for posting it! I've found the 6th house hard to understand - that shed a lot of light on it.

I don't really get this "Earth" thing. Why are we counting the planet that we're on again?

    I don't know jenfullmoon.

According to some of the things I read on this subject of 'earth' it is supposed to mean what we're here to do with the tools given in the first house.  For me it showed up as in 'you've got a sprocket given to you by being born in Scorpio sun in House I, but you've got to apply it to the whonkus in Taurus earth in House 7 to make YOUR own special brand of knowledge available to humanity.  I'm still just confused.  Because when I look exactly opposite it appears that mine would be in the 8th in Gem instead, but no, don't think so.

Still don't know what to do with this info.  I've got a tool.  Too bad I don't know what to use it on at this later stage of my life STILL!  Forgive me if I'm being obtuse, but I thought that was what the NN was supposed to be telling me.  How many jobs am I here to do and not getting any of them done because I still don't know all these years later why the H' I'm here and what I'm supposed to do when I grow up and shooot I've been a grown up for a long while now?????

Jen: I don't know the answer to that. What I do know is that it exists in astrology, but usually only in heliocentric astrology, which casts the chart with the Sun in the center and recalculates the chart  from there. The sun then is not in the chart, but the earth is. All the outer planets stay pretty much the same, but the inners switch around as the center has shifted.

As to why to even think about counting the planet we are on? For me, I am just curious. I like to explore all of the tools out there, and see if they feel valid to me. I figured this forum is a great place to get feedback. While I have never really explored heliocentric astrology (yet) I figured the Earth was a great place to start (pun intended) because it is the one planet you can easily calculate using your traditional chart as it is always exactly opposite the sun.

Here is a brief explanation from take directly from heliocentric-astrology.com:

The usual geocentric chart that is cast for the time of your birth has the Earth at the centre and the ascendant and descendant points marking the horizon, dividing the sky into a visible and an invisible part. Somewhere in that sky are the planets. Somewhere in that sky is the Sun.

Astrology has always given the Sun the meaning of  life. The Sun is the spirit, life force, power, authority and ultimately the goal of your life.

Now, imagine for a moment being free from the physical boundaries marking your chart.
Imagine a chart where the centre is the Sun. It's still you at the centre of the chart. You are the Sun. The life force, the spirit, the power, the source emanating the light... you are all this.

Around you are the planets, marking the paths of your life.
