Wow! ![]()
I have John Glenn's autograph in one of my yearbooks. :)
He came by to speak at our school once; we had two weeks a year (one in fall, one in spring) where there were speeches and demonstrations at lunch that you could go to if you wanted. I was really excited to hear what he had to say, and then my heart dropped when I realized from the audience questions that most of the people in the room didn't know who he was. :( I was appalled!
But I got to talk to him for a little bit afterwards and he signed my book. Cloud ninety-nine!! :D I remember him as a very nice, plain-spoken guy with a firm handshake.
I remember this. It happened during school hours. I was allowed to stay home to watch the launch on TV. When Dad took me to school later that morning, we found the entire school was in the gym watching one TV set. It was probably the largest one they could find, which is small by today's standards. Of course, the school was small by today's standards as well.
That was an event to have a whole school session. It was very exciting.
There was a sense of huge national pride. There was also the feeling the USA was behind in "the space race" and had to work doubly hard to catch up and pass the USSR.
As I think back, I don't remember my siblings staying home, too. They probably did. I was too excited to remember them. I was 9 years old.
@ SaDiablo, that's terrible that people didn't know John Glenn. So sweet for you to have access and an autograph. I'd have been on cloud 99 with you.
Thanks, SE. :) I thought it was a spectacular privilege! (Still do, too. *smiles*)
"I was allowed to stay home to watch the launch on TV."
I was allowed to stay home to watch the Challenger launch. I will never forget that I was folding laundry when she blew. :( I was horrified. (Not traumatised, just incredibly bewildered and sad. I really felt for those watching in-person and the families.)
By the time the space shuttles were used, it wasn't such a big thing to me. I was older.
I was away from the TV during the two shuttle disasters. It must have been horrible to see the Challenger explode live on TV. Just horrible.
I was at work the day the Challenger exploded. I felt "off". Jan. 28, 1986. Years later I felt the same "off." I was tying to remember feeling that way. I finally thought, "This is how I felt when the Challenger exploded." A few minutes later, my husband met me at the gate as I coming back to the house from the barn. He told me the Columbia was lost on re-entry. Feb 1, 2003.
